Shiba Rescue of New Jersey:
Wesely was picked up as stray in Atlantic City New Jersey severely underweight, almost total hiar loss, skin infection and lesion It was also discovered that Wesely has early stages of kidney disease. Clearly he has made remarkable progress but still has weakness in his hind quarters and trembles when standing or eating.

Fanci was adopted from a local shelter in NJ, within a few weeks the owner decided that she could no longer care for due to medical issues (seizures) and contacted Shiba Rescue of New Jersey. We learned that Fanci was in out of multiple homes in her brief life but finally found a great home with people who really love her for who she is.

Midwest Shiba Inu Rescue:
Oliver, while medically healthy, does need a home that will continue with his training. Originating from the shiba homeland, Japan, Oliver made his way here to MSIR because of his temper and behavioral shortcomings – he’s had his fair share of families in his short life. However, through amazing and relentless training by his foster parents, he is finally becoming a more social and trusting pup and enjoying the life! He is still in training and will not officially be available for adoption until his foster home is confident he will be a happy, well-behaved Shiba when the perfect forever family comes along!

Faith was diagnosed with an ectopic ureter. The tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder was attached below the bladder muscles, giving her no control over urination. This congenital abnormality is fairly common in certain breeds, but complicated by the fact that Faith has only one kidney. Through surgery, Faith is now able to avoid constant infection and inflammation that could cause life threatening damage to her kidney and most of all (to her), NO MORE DIAPERS! Faith still has one more hurdle to face. She will need her left hind leg amputated. She was born with a severely deformed femur, knee, and foot. Faith is a sweet affectionate girl and has always been in good spirits despite what she's gone through. She is now looking for her furever home.

Save Me Scout Rescue:
Yuki came to our rescue in February as a 2 month old puppy from a puppy mill operation, along with Nori. It was soon discovered that Yuki had a severe heart murmur and luckily we were able to raise the funds to have an echocardiogram done in order to diagnose the cause. The murmur was caused by a small hole in his heart but thankfully was not likely to cause any long term health issues. Yuki is now happily adopted and living quite the different life he could have had, living in a filth covered outdoor cage, producing puppies for pet stores with no human contact. And it is because of the wonderful Shiba community that our rescue was able to make that happen.

Colorado Shiba Inu Rescue:
Toshi is a young, energetic and cuddly little Shiba rescued from a puppy mill. He loves his foster Shiblings, foster meowies and foster parents, but isn't too sure about little humans. He likes going to his foster parents brewing company with them and sampling the spent grain doggy biscuits they make. Toshi loves to cuddle and be cuddled and is looking for a forever home that likes the same!

Hanae was also released to rescue from a puppy mill and was one of the most fearful dogs we've met, despite being released at only one year of age. Hanae has come a long ways, though, in rescue and is learning to trust more people. She is absolutely adores every puppy we get in rescue and immediately becomes their favorite friend, mentor and often, sleep buddy. Hanae still needs time to warm up to new people and generally warms up to women faster than men. She is looking for a forever home with a fenced-in yard, another young, social dog or two and lots of patience and love.

NYC Shiba Rescue:
Buttons was one of the 10 Shibas from the "NJ-22" that we took in in 2011. Buttons was under a year old at the time and lived with over 25 other dogs in a tiny house. When Buttons went into foster care, he was so scared of everything. With the love and support of his foster mom, Regina, he grew into a loving, confident and supportive companion. Buttons never left- he was home! About a year ago, his foster-turned-furever mom, who is legally blind, found that her sight was degrading further. Regina wrote about it for Barkpost, "Stairs are a literal death trap. One day, I noticed Buttons was taking stairs one by one. He carefully put his paw at the edge of each stair and waited for me to step down before he moved on... He wanted me to feel safe with him and with the world around me. He wanted to help me feel free". Now, Buttons is Regina's Service Dog! He's given her the security, love, support and independence that she gave him. He's truly a hero- every single day!

Back in 2012 we received received an email from a veterinary practice in CT about a pregnant Shiba Inu that was brought into their office. She was very very sick and they were not sure she was strong enough to deliver her puppies. She’d been given to the owners at a flea market a few weeks before and they were not willing to commit to her continued care. We immediately decided we were meant to help save Layla. A few days later, our poor Layla gave birth to six dead puppies. Two days later, Layla crashed - we rushed her from the practice in CT to an emergency hospital in Rhode Island. We decided that that day was not the day to give up on her. We asked the surgeon to proceed to exploratory surgery. Once he was able to get in, he found that the first part of the small intestine that joins the stomach had a 1/4 inch perforation. After over $10,000 (the most we had spent on any one dog before!) she was able to be released, and went into foster care to recover for several months. Over time, she healed! She became strong! She played with her foster brother and sisters! She endured Hurricane Sandy! Layla was then adopted and has become the center of her furever dad & mom's world. You would never know how close she came to not making it- TWICE! She is full of love, energy and tons of spunk. Layla is a survivor!

DC SIR:
Hi! My name is now Baku and I’m a 18 month old red male Shiba Inu. I found myself in rescue because my family didn’t feel they could care for me. They were gone 12 hour days and I would get real anxious and nervous when they were gone. They also got a Pitbull puppy who would attack me so I was always scared. My family bought me from a pet store, not knowing that 99% of puppies from pet stores are puppy mill dogs. Our parents live in horrible conditions and fearfulness is hereditary and rampant in the mills. I am fearful of men in uniforms and scary sounds.
So let me tell you a little about myself. I have a mangled rear leg and the vet thinks it’s from a tourniquet that was tied on my leg. It doesn’t hurt and it’s how I’ll be all my life but DC SIR vet will take a look at it too. I have a small tail but it is so cute. I am in foster care with 3 other dogs and they won’t attack me so I’m happy to romp and play with them without fear of being attacked! So my family searched for the perfect place for me, and that is how they found DC SIR. They have trainers who specialize in fearful dogs & foster homes who have taken classes on working with fearful dogs. My new foster home has friendly dogs for me to play with as they work with my fear issues. I’m very lovable and warmed up right away to my foster mom and dad. I’m good with dogs & will be tested with cats. |
Hi! My new name is Kami and I am a very special Shiba Inu puppy. I was born on December 9, 2014 in a puppy mill in Lancaster, PA. It was a horrible place that my parents will die in. A family bought me but noticed I had a head tilt and walked in circles so they took me to the vet in January. The vet gave me drugs and watched to see if I would get better. But a month later, I was worse. By April I was walking in circles, had mild facial paralysis and my condition worsened. My family refused neurologist and brought me back to the vet at the end of April to euthanize me. I was so scared. I wasn’t a bad girl. Why can’t I live and play like other dogs?
I was real lucky that the kind people at the veterinary office convinced my owners to surrender me to the hospital. A nice employee took me home for a short time but I didn’t play well with the other dogs. Soon the vet office found DC SIR. They said they didn’t have the funding to care for me long term but DC SIR successfully treated rescues like me before. DC SIR asked their vet if I could get better like the other dogs. They think I can. But they told me no matter what, that I’m going to be loved and cared for and no one will dump me anywhere ever again. |
Safe Harbor Animal Rescue:
My name is Keiko & I am a 2 1/2 years old. My brothers & I were saved by Safe Harbor Animal Rescue from a puppy mill in Missouri. My brother & reigning Shiba Prom King is Kona Stealing Hearts & I am wearing his tuxedo to honor his memory. You see we were both were born with congenital defects & I have a very bad heart. Something mom & dad call Tetralogy of Fallot. Because of this condition, I can't do many things a normal dog would do, but I try!! I love walks by Lake Erie, however I make mom carry me half way through as I tire quickly. Car rides are so awesome and I'm easily entertained by my sister, Asti. She's crazy enough for the both of us! I will do anything for cheese, anything...even wake up from my naps. My favorite past time though is snuggling with mom or dad.

Moi, Leia, is a 6-year-old Shiba who was rescued from a Missouri puppy mill by the folks at Safe Harbor in 2013. I've been through a lot, and I'm still not too sure about people, but I LOVE my Shiba sisfur, Hana (also a Safe Harbor alum), also running around in my back yard (especially when that hunk of a black lab, Jackson, is in his yard next door), barking to warn my people of impending attacks by microwave popcorn and ice machines, and, of course, cheese (I AM a Shiba!). After my experience at the mill, I'm not big on cuddles, but I keep my humans in sight and pay close attention to what they do, I'll usually come over for some sniffs if they call me, and sometimes I even let them pet me! I'm definitely digging life outside the mill, and want to thank Safe Harbor for rescuing me (and, all of the other Shibas and dogs, especially Hana)!
